Features of Airbag Clock Spring for Jeep Cherokee

Maintains Electrical Connection
The clock spring's primary feature is its ability to maintain a constant electrical connection between the steering wheel and the vehicle's electrical system as the steering wheel turns.

Spiral-Wound Design
It contains a series of small, coiled wires that wrap and unwrap between two discs, allowing the steering wheel to turn freely without damaging the electrical connections.

Integrated Safety Systems
It connects the driver's airbag and the horn to the vehicle's power supply, ensuring these vital safety components function correctly.

Restores Steering Wheel Controls
The clock spring also facilitates the operation of other steering wheel-mounted controls, such as cruise control and radio buttons.

Durable Construction
High-quality, durable materials are used to prevent internal ribbon cable breakage, which is a common cause of clock spring failures.

Procedure for Replacing the Jeep Cherokee Airbag Clock Spring

Prepare for installation
Before you begin, disconnect the positive (red) terminal on your battery and wait at least 15 minutes. This ensures that there is no power left in the systems. Also, make sure that your front wheels are pointed straight and not turned in one direction or the other, as this will prevent damage to the new spring.

Remove the steering wheel
Remove the two 5/16" bolts on the backside of the steering wheel (one on each side) using a ratchet and 5/16" deep socket. Pull the horn cover off. Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the connector from the airbag and disconnect the wire leading to the horn button.

Replace airbag clock spring
The airbag clock spring is held in place by snap locks. Remove it by simply prying it off with a flat head screwdriver from the back. Use the flat head screwdriver to disconnect the two wiring connectors hooked up to the spring.

Re-install steering wheel
Replace the lower steering column cover and re-install the three screws holding it in place. Slide the steering wheel back on and re-install the bolt. Re-install the connector on the airbag and the horn button wire. Then re-install the horn pad and the two screws holding it in place. Finally, reconnect your battery.

FAQ

Q: What tools do I need to replace the clock-spring?

A: To replace the clock-spring, you typically need basic automotive tools such as a ratchet and socket set, screwdrivers, and possibly a steering wheel puller. Additionally, it's beneficial to have safety equipment on hand, like gloves and goggles, to ensure a safe working environment.

Q: Can the clock-spring affect my vehicle's cruise control?

A: Yes, if the clock-spring is defective, it can affect the functionality of your vehicle’s cruise control system. Since the clock-spring connects various electrical components in the steering wheel, any disruption to these signals can lead to cruise control malfunction.

Q: How does the clock-spring affect the airbag system?

A: The clock-spring plays a crucial role in the airbag system by maintaining an electrical connection between the airbag and the car’s electronics, even when the steering wheel is turned. A faulty clock-spring can disrupt this connection, potentially disabling the airbag and increasing risks during an accident. Replacing a worn or damaged clock-spring is a proactive step toward ensuring the airbag system functions properly, keeping you and your passengers safe.

Q: How do I know if my clock-spring needs replacement?

A: Signs that your clock-spring may need replacement include issues like the airbag warning light illuminating on the dashboard, non-functioning steering wheel controls, or difficulty in using the horn. If you're experiencing any abnormal behavior with your vehicle's electrical steering features, it's advisable to inspect the clock-spring.

Q: Is installation of the Replacement Wire Clock-Spring difficult?

A: Installing the Replacement Wire Clock-Spring can vary in complexity depending on your comfort level with automotive repairs. Basic tools are typically needed, and the process usually involves removing the steering wheel and some surrounding components. If you are familiar with vehicle maintenance, you may find it manageable.

Q: What should I consider when buying a clock spring?

A: When purchasing a clock spring, you should consider several factors: compatibility with your vehicle's make and model, the quality of the part, and whether it's an OEM or aftermarket option. Additionally, look for reputable sellers and check customer reviews to gauge reliability and performance. Proper research ensures that you get a quality product that enhances your vehicle’s safety and functionality.
