FAQ

Q: How does an airbag clock spring work?

A: In vehicle steering systems, a clock spring or clockspring is a spiral-wound special rotary electrical conductor which allows a vehicle's steering wheel to turn while maintaining the connection between the airbag mounted in the wheel and/or the vehicle's horn and other devices, and the vehicle's electrical system.

Q: Can I drive without a clock spring?

A: While you can drive with a bad clock spring, it's not recommended because important safety features like airbags and horns won't function properly.

Q: Does the airbag clock spring control the horn?

A: A faulty clock spring can also disable the horn or cruise control. The horn is critical for alerting others on the road, and its failure compromises safety. Cruise control depends on precise electrical signals, which can be interrupted by a damaged clock spring.

Q: How long do clock springs last?

A: Clock springs can last the entire lifespan of a vehicle, but they can also fail after just a few years, depending on usage and manufacturing quality. Factors that contribute to failure include normal wear and tear, extreme temperature changes, and steering wheel over-rotation, which can damage the internal ribbon of wires.

Q: Can you clean a clock spring?

A: Apply clock cleaning solution to the mainspring using a soft brush or soak the spring if heavily soiled. Wipe away old oil, grease, and dirt with a lint-free cloth. Clean the inside of the barrel thoroughly, removing all old lubricant and debris. Dry the parts completely with a clean cloth or let them air-dry.

Q: Does clock spring affect steering?

A: Yes, a faulty clock spring can indirectly affect your steering by causing issues with the power steering system, as well as by disabling the horn, airbag, and steering wheel controls. The clock spring provides electrical connections to these components while the steering wheel rotates. If it fails, it can cause the airbag light to come on, the horn to not work, or for power steering systems to malfunction, though it does not directly change the physical steering mechanism itself.
