Installation Steps for Ignition Coil for GM

Remove the Engine Cover: If your vehicle has one, remove the engine cover to access the ignition coils.

Disconnect Hoses: Unplug any hoses connected to the coil assembly to gain clear access.

Disconnect the Electrical Connector: Press the tab on the electrical connector and slide it off the coil.

Remove the Spark Plug Wire (if applicable): On some models, a spark plug wire connects to the bottom of the coil; carefully pull it off.

Remove Old Bolts: Use the appropriate socket to remove the bolts securing the ignition coil to the engine.

Remove Old Coil: Gently slide the old coil out of its position.

Prepare the New Coil: If your coil didn't come pre-greased, apply a small amount of high-quality dielectric grease to the bottom of the boot where it meets the spark plug.

Install the New Coil: Line up the new coil and press it down firmly onto the spark plug or into the coil boot.

Secure the Coil: Insert the two bolts back into their holes and tighten them to secure the new coil.

Reconnect Electrical Connector: Plug the electrical connector back into the new coil until it clicks into place.

Reconnect Hoses: Reinstall any hoses you removed earlier.

Reinstall Engine Cover: Put the engine cover back on.

FAQ

Q: How long do GM ignition coils last?

A: Ignition coils tend to last around 100,000 miles of driving, although this distance can vary depending on coil quality and driving conditions. Anything that puts the engine under more strain may cause your coils to wear out sooner.

Q: What to look for when buying ignition coils?

A: Coil Style.
Primary Resistance.
Turns Ratio.
Maximum Voltage.

Q: Why is my car still misfiring after I change the spark plugs and ignition coil?

A: Your car is likely still misfiring because of underlying issues like a faulty fuel injector, vacuum leak, damaged ignition wiring, low compression from a mechanical problem, or even a problem with the engine's computer (PCM) or related sensors. To accurately diagnose the problem, you should scan the Check Engine Light for specific codes, inspect the ignition wiring and coil boots for damage, and consider performing a fuel pressure test or compression test.

Q: What are the symptoms of a failing ignition coil?

A: Symptoms of a failing ignition coil include an illuminated Check Engine Light, engine misfires and rough idling, difficulty starting, poor acceleration, a loss of power, and a noticeable fuel smell from the exhaust, sometimes accompanied by a strong gas odor or black exhaust smoke. A vehicle may also backfire, sputter, or stall when a coil is failing.

Q: Should I replace ignition coils with spark plugs?

A: You generally do not need to replace ignition coils with spark plugs, as spark plugs are maintenance items that wear out, while coils typically only need to be replaced when they fail and cause engine misfires. However, replacing spark plugs at the same time is a convenient good idea if access is difficult, as it avoids doing the labor twice.

Q: Can a bad ignition coil cause a rough idle?

A: Yes, a bad ignition coil can definitely cause a rough idle. A failing ignition coil prevents a spark plug from firing correctly, leading to a misfire and a shaky, uneven engine performance when the vehicle is idling. This incomplete combustion can make the engine feel shaky, and the engine RPMs may also become erratic at idle.
