Types of Ignition Coil

01

Conventional Ignition Coils

Conventional ignition coils, also known as canister-style coils, have been widely used in older vehicles. They are typically mounted outside the engine and consist of a metal canister housing the primary and secondary windings.

02

Distributorless Ignition System (DIS) Coils

With the advancement in ignition technology, distributorless ignition systems (DIS) have become more prevalent. DIS coils are typically mounted directly on the spark plugs or close to the spark plugs, eliminating the need for a distributor.

03

Coil-on-Plug (COP) Ignition Coils

Coil-on-plug (COP) ignition coils take the concept of DIS coils a step further. In COP systems, each cylinder has its own ignition coil mounted directly on the spark plug. This configuration eliminates the need for spark plug wires and provides even more precise and efficient ignition.

Advantages of Ignition Coil

Improved Fuel Efficiency

By ensuring a consistent and powerful spark, ignition coils optimize the combustion process, which can lead to better fuel economy.

Reduced Emissions

Efficient combustion not only sends your vehicle zooming forward but also reduces harmful emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Enhanced Engine Power

The ignition coil ensures that the engine receives a reliable and powerful spark, potentially increasing horsepower and torque.

Longevity and Reliability

High-quality ignition coils are designed to last, reducing maintenance needs and the risk of engine breakdowns.

Key Components of the Ignition Coil

Primary and Secondary Windings

The primary winding consists of a reduced number of turns of thick wire, while the secondary winding contains thousands of turns of thinner wire.

Magnetic Core

Made from materials such as iron or special alloys to maximize magnetic flux density and minimize losses.

Casing and Insulating Materials

Designed to withstand extreme conditions, such as high temperatures, vibrations, and pollutants.

Ignition Coil Replacement Steps

1. Prepare your tools and workspace

Start by gathering the necessary tools, including a socket wrench set, a torque wrench, and possibly a flathead screwdriver. Make sure your vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is completely cool before you begin.

2. Locate the ignition coils

Open the hood and locate the ignition coils, which are typically mounted on top of the engine. Depending on your vehicle’s make and model, you might need to remove a plastic engine cover or other components to gain access to the coils.

3. Remove the faulty ignition coil

Start by unplugging the electrical connector from the coil. This might require pressing a tab or using a small screwdriver to release the clip. Next, use your socket wrench to remove the bolts or screws securing the ignition coil to the engine.

4. Install the new ignition coil

Take the new ignition coil and position it over the spark plug, ensuring it is aligned properly. Press it down firmly until it’s seated on the spark plug, then secure it with the bolts or screws you removed earlier.

5. Reassemble and test

After replacing the coil, reconnect the battery terminal and reassemble any components you removed to access the coils. Start the engine and listen for smooth operation. If the engine runs without any misfires or hesitation, you’ve successfully replaced the ignition coil.

FAQ

Q: How often should ignition coils be replaced?

A: It varies by car model and the type of coil used. Generally, ignition coils last around 100,000 miles, but always check your vehicle's owner manual for specific guidance.

Q: Can I replace ignition coils myself?

A: If you are familiar with car maintenance, you can replace ignition coils yourself with basic tools. However, if uncertain, consulting an automotive professional is advisable to ensure proper installation.

Q: What symptoms indicate failing ignition coils?

A: Common symptoms include engine misfires, difficulty starting the engine, a decrease in fuel efficiency, and the check engine light turning on. If you notice these signs, it could be time to replace the ignition coils.

Q: How to trigger an ignition coil?

A: Connect the negative one to the battery. Then take the positive wire, and quickly swipe it over the other battery terminal. You should see and hear sparks at the ignition coil as you do this.

Q: What to look for when buying ignition coils?

A: Coil Style. Depending on the design of your ignition system, the coil will be 1 of 3 basic designs.
Primary Resistance. Primary resistance is a common spec used to choose a coil.
Turns Ratio.
Maximum Voltage.

Q: How to properly install an ignition coil?

A: Turn off the engine.
Locate the ignition coil.
Remove the center coil wire from the top of the ignition coil.
Remove the power wires connected to the coil.
Loosen the coil mounting bracket clamp.
Slide the old coil out of the mounting bracket.
Insert the new ignition coil.
