Opel Airbag Clock Spring Replacement Steps

Move your steering wheel to the upright position, then turn off your car.
Wrap the steering wheel securely with tape over the slot where the airbag is positioned so that if it is unintentionally activated, the impact can be mitigated somewhat.
Remove the car battery and wait at least 5 minutes for the remaining power attached to the airbag-activation system to drain.
Locate and gently remove the screws, nuts and bolts that secure the steering wheel.
Using a puller tool, remove the steering wheel and locate the clock spring in the steering column.
Disconnect the faulty clock spring. How to do so may vary between cars and clock spring models, so you may need to refer to user or owner manuals.
Get your new clock spring, and rotate it clockwise in position as far as possible before repeating this motion counterclockwise. Ensure that the pins are locked and the clock spring is aligned with any arrows or marks on the outer housing.
Reconnect the cables for the horn, airbag and so on to your new clock spring.
Reattach the steering wheel, replacing any nuts, screws and bolts you removed.
Replace your car battery and you should be good to go.

FAQ

Q: Will a bad clock spring affect my airbag?

A: Your horn and your driver's side airbag are two of the most important safety elements of your vehicle. Therefore, if they're not functioning due to a broken clockspring, you are increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.

Q: Does clock spring affect traction control?

A: In any car, clock springs play an important role in making multiple systems function correctly, such as cruise control, traction control systems, the horn, and more.

Q: Can I drive with a bad clockspring?

A: No, you should not drive a vehicle with a bad clock spring because it compromises your safety by disabling the driver's airbag and horn, and can also cause other steering wheel controls to fail. A clock spring's critical role is to maintain electrical connections for these vital safety components as the steering wheel turns. Driving with this issue, while physically possible, is dangerous due to the increased risk of serious injury in an accident and potential breakdowns.

Q: Does clock spring affect cruise control?

A: Yes, a bad clock spring can prevent your cruise control from working because it disrupts the electrical signals between the steering wheel controls and the vehicle's computer. When a clock spring fails, it creates an open circuit, leading to symptoms like an inoperative horn, non-functional steering wheel buttons, an illuminated airbag light, and disabled cruise control.

Q: What is the lifespan of a clock spring?

A: The airbag clock spring is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. On some older models, the wiring inside the clock spring can become brittle and break over time, causing failure.

Q: How important is a clock spring?

A: Without a functioning airbag clock spring, you can't trust that your airbag is going to work in the event of an accident. This is because one of its key functions is to essentially transfer the power signals from your car's electrical system and sensors at the right moment to deploy your airbag safely.
