FAQ

Q: How does an airbag clock spring work?

A: In vehicle steering systems, a clock spring or clockspring is a spiral-wound special rotary electrical conductor which allows a vehicle's steering wheel to turn while maintaining the connection between the airbag mounted in the wheel and/or the vehicle's horn and other devices, and the vehicle's electrical system.

Q: Can a bad clock spring cause an airbag to deploy?

A: Clock spring – A bad clock spring in the steering wheel can cause the airbag to malfunction when you need it most. Damage to the clock spring can cause you to lose a connection between the airbag control module and the steering wheel airbag.

Q: Can I drive without a clock spring?

A: While you can drive with a bad clock spring, it's not recommended because important safety features like airbags and horns won't function properly.

Q: What happens if you remove the clock spring?

A: The clock spring is a vital part of your car's steering system that ensures electrical connections between the steering wheel and the vehicle. Without it, essential functions like the airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls won't work properly.

Q: What is the lifespan of a clock spring?

A: The airbag clock spring is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. On some older models, the wiring inside the clock spring can become brittle and break over time, causing failure.

Q: Do you have to replace the clock spring after airbag deployment?

A: Yes, you generally must replace the clock spring after an airbag deploys because the intense heat and forces from the deployment can damage the delicate ribbon conductors inside the clock spring, making it unreliable or completely inoperable. Replacing the clock spring is crucial for safety, as it allows for the continued electrical connection needed for the airbag system to function correctly in future events.
