Signs of a LAND ROVER Ignition Coil Failure

The vehicle won’t start
If you are trying to start your Range Rover and it just doesn’t want to know, there is a high chance the ignition coil is no longer doing its job and failing to provide enough voltage.

Check engine light comes on
If your Range Rover indicates you may need to check your engine, it could be due to the ignition coils not working as they should. The thing is many issues can trigger the light so you will need to use onboard diagnostics to determine whether the problem could stem from the ignition coil.

Using more fuel than usual
If your Range Rover is now getting through the fuel much faster than normal despite your driving routine not changing, there could be an issue with the ignition coil. A faulty coil is unable to generate the spark needed to ignite the air-fuel mix and as a result, the engine has less power.

Poor acceleration and lack of power
If you could normally pull away smoothly and with good acceleration but have now noticed things have become a little sluggish, it could be due to the ignition coils not working as they should.

Frequent stalling or misfiring
If you have noticed your Range Rover stalling or misfiring, the ignition coil could be causing a few problems. Like many of our possible signs of ignition coil failure, this too can be attributed to other things, but you certainly shouldn’t discount the ignition coils.

FAQ

Q: What are the symptoms of a failing ignition coil?

A: Symptoms of a failing ignition coil include an illuminated Check Engine Light, engine misfires and rough idling, difficulty starting, poor acceleration, a loss of power, and a noticeable fuel smell from the exhaust, sometimes accompanied by a strong gas odor or black exhaust smoke. A vehicle may also backfire, sputter, or stall when a coil is failing.

Q: How to know which ignition coil needs replacing?

A: To evaluate the ignition coils, measure the resistance between the two pins of the coil. If the coil is functioning properly, the resistance should be between 0.558 and 0.682 ohms, with a tolerance of plus or minus 10 percent based on the weather conditions.

Q: What will changing ignition coils do?

A: Upgraded ignition coils provide a stronger spark compared to stock coils. A stronger spark ensures more complete combustion of the air-fuel mixture, leading to increased power output and quicker acceleration. This improved spark strength also contributes to smoother idling and reduced misfires.

Q: Can you still drive with a bad ignition coil?

A: You can drive with a bad ignition coil, but it is not recommended for more than a short distance to get to a repair shop, as it can lead to severe and costly damage to your engine, catalytic converter, and potentially other components. Driving with a misfiring cylinder can cause unburned fuel to enter the exhaust, damaging the catalytic converter, diluting the engine oil, and causing premature wear on the cylinder walls and bearings.

Q: How long should an ignition coil last?

A: Ignition coils, much like when the clutch goes, can fail due to how well looked after the vehicle is, the driving style of the driver and the quality of the product installed. You should typically expect around 50,000 miles or more from an ignition coil.

Q: Is it safe to test ignition coils?

A: Yes. An ignition coil has two elements inside – the primary (the lower voltage) and the secondary (the higher voltage that ignites the spark plug). When testing the coil, you need to test the secondary voltage so it's important to align the equipment up to that element.
