NISSAN Airbag Clock Spring Replacement Steps

Disconnect the battery:Disconnect battery and wait at least 10 minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge to prevent accidental airbag deployment.

Center New Clock Spring:Ensure the new clock spring is centered correctly. Most new clock springs include a manufacturer pin to prevent excessive rotation during shipment but it DOES NOT keep the clock spring centered!

Steering Wheel Position:Ensure the steering wheel is straight and the wheels are pointing straight ahead before you start. This alignment is crucial for the proper positioning of the new clock spring.

Airbag Removal:Carefully remove the airbag module from the steering wheel. This usually involves loosening retaining bolts or clips from the backside of the steering wheel. Handle the airbag with care and store it in a safe place, facing up.

Steering Wheel Removal:Loosen the nut holding the steering wheel. Use a steering wheel puller if necessary. Do not force the steering wheel off; this could damage the column or the existing clock spring.

Clock Spring Removal:Disconnect the electrical connectors, then carefully remove the old clock spring. Note how it is positioned and secured, as the new one should be installed identically.

Remove your angle sensor:Remove the angle sensor from the back of your old clock spring and mount it on to your new clock spring.

Install New Clock Spring:Carefully align and install the new clock spring. Make sure it seats properly and that all the wiring is correctly connected and not pinched.

Reassemble:Reattach the steering wheel, ensuring it's correctly aligned with the wheels. Then, reinstall the airbag module and reconnect all the electrical connectors.

Final Checks:Once everything is reassembled, reconnect the battery, and turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Check for any warning lights and ensure that the horn and steering wheel controls operate correctly.

FAQ

Q: What is a Air Bag Clock Spring?

A: The airbag clock spring is a vital component in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), also known as the airbag system or passive restraint system. The airbag clock spring connects the driver's side airbag to the steering column and ensures that electrical contact is maintained between the airbag module and the vehicle electrical system while the steering wheel is being turned.

Q: How does an Air Bag Clock Spring work?

A: The airbag clock spring is mounted to the end of the steering column directly behind the steering wheel. It contains a series of small wires wound in a spiral between two plates or discs. These wires rotate between the discs inside the clock spring when the steering wheel is turned from side to side. As the steering wheel turns, the coiled wires wrap freely in both directions.

Q: What are the symptoms of a bad Air Bag Clock Spring?

A: Problems with the airbag clock spring occur when the wires inside the clock spring become fatigued over time and break. This can cause an open circuit or a short circuit in one or more of the systems connected by the clock spring. The clock spring can also become damaged if the driver's airbag is deployed in a crash. The airbag (or SRS) warning light will usually come on when the clock spring is damaged.

Q: Can I drive with a bad Air Bag Clock Spring?

A: Because the airbag and the horn are both vehicle safety components, and because they are connected through the steering wheel and airbag clock spring, a faulty clock spring should be replaced as soon as possible. A defective airbag clock spring will often defeat the Supplemental Restraint System, preventing the airbags from inflating in a crash.

Q: How often do Air Bag Clocksprings need replacement?

A: The airbag clock spring is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. On some older models, the wiring inside the clock spring can become brittle and break over time, causing failure. The clock spring may need to be replaced if it is damaged during careless service to the steering system, and, in some cases, if the vehicle is in a crash and the driver's airbag deploys.

Q: How are Air Bag Clocksprings diagnosed?

A: A technician will use a scan tool to check the electrical system for signs of a faulty airbag clock spring. A test with a multimeter may also be done on the clock spring itself. A repair manual and wiring diagram are used to identify and test each circuit running through the clock spring.
